History of the Thrift Store

The Salvation Army has operated a Thrift Store on this site since 1955.

The Thrift Store provides approximately $48,000 in welfare sales – items given to persons in need for free – each year.

Each year, sales from the Thrift Store provide approximately $46,000 for operation of the Emergency Shelter.

15,000 people in La Crosse County currently live below the poverty level.  In 2000, that number was just under 11,000

If you make less than $9.63 an hour, you are considered in the poverty level

Thank people on social security disability insurance have it easy?  SSI provides between $8,136 and $9,600 a year.

The Salvation Army of La Crosse operates the only homeless shelter within an 8 county area.

This is the only shelter of this size and programming options between Madison and Minneapolis

The shelter has 80 possible beds, with most of those being primarily for men, however the fastest growing segment of the homeless
population is families. The shelter is almost always operating at 90 + % capacity in regard to bed options for women and children.

Approximately 50% of people in the Emergency Shelter have some sort of income when they check in.

The biggest barrier to moving out of shelter in La Crosse is a lack of housing available to extremely low income persons.
